The Atlanta Braves’ Plans for 2010

It has been several years since the Atlanta Braves have been decently competitive, but they were pretty good in 2009.  They almost made the playoffs, and if they had not had such a poor first half of the season, they may have even won the National League East.  But they didn’t, so now it is time to look ahead to 2010.

The main theme of 2010 will be that it is Bobby Cox’s last year.  Bobby Cox is a great regular season manager, and I would take him over any other active manager if I needed him to get me into the playoffs.  While his teams seemed to fall apart in the playoffs, I don’t think that you can overlook his baseball accomplishments.  2010 will be a sad year because of Bobby leaving.

The Atlanta Braves had great pitching in 2009, and they currently have 6 very good pitchers that will need to fit into 5 spots.  The consensus is that one of the pitchers will get traded for a bat, but I am not sure that anyone knows which pitcher it will be.  It may very well be Derek Lowe that gets moved in an effort to get a better outfielder.

The Braves have a situation at 1st base.  Adam LaRoche joined the Braves after the All-Star break and really helped propel them to their great run in the second half.  But he is a free agent now, and someone with more money than the Braves are willing to spend may snatch him up.  And since they have Freddie Freeman who will be ready for the big leagues in the next couple of years, Atlanta may not want to give Adam more than a 2-year contract.  If Adam can get 3 years from another team, he will probably go.
